…now is not the time to be shy!

Normally we would start such a contemplative blog with a question. But the Coronavirus doesn’t wait for answers, so neither will we, nor will we ask the usual questions about what is right? Instead, in the third re-write of this blog after reading how cases are increasing rapidly, that stocks have dived around the world, it’s time to come to the point from the lead paragraph: we must not be shy to communicate our companies’ and clients’ offering that can play a role in defeating our global common enemy: COVID-19 or coronavirus.
YES, we need to hear what solutions exist.
YES, we need to hear how companies and organisations have ideas, products, solutions to help the world battle this common enemy.
Info-demia?
Let’s be clear though, we are not calling for an all-out communications onslaught that would prove more confusing than the media coverage of this virus. We should not contribute to what one media outlet refered to as an “info-demic”. The world, and particularly those on the front line (policy and medical) battling this virus, need to hear clear, concise arguments for solutions.
The role of the communications profession today is clear: ensure our companies and clients can honestly enter this discussion with real solutions and without hysteria and excitement.
Let’s stick to the facts

Communications strategies should be minimalist and targeted. The messages should be factual and scientific but not overly technical and should clearly articulate the role of the product or service.
Last and not least, the public will expect and look for the solemn acknowledgement that every organisation is offering its products and services in the spirit of the free market BUT with the greater good in mind. There can be no future for any company without public health. Companies must demonstrate strong ethical values and historical evidence of this will to support the sincerity of the communication.
Whether your solution is protective facemasks donated to support emergency services worldwide like Johnson&Johnson or distance learning tools such as Microsoft #msftadvocate. Those on the front line of responding and protecting our health need to hear from you so we can beat this!
